Unified Purpose: Connection to Mission, Values & History

Over the last several years there has been an increased emphasis on organizational purpose, mission, and values.

With the changing demographics of the workforce, companies are discovering that employees are searching for companies whose values and purpose align and fulfill their personal values and beliefs.

This means that companies need to articulate their mission and values in a way that inspires deep connection and worth.

While most companies have well-crafted mission statements and core values, they struggle to communicate and leverage these in an intentional and strategic way.

Hanging posters and implementing communication campaigns will certainly help drive awareness, but without linking these to core principals, behaviors, and business strategies and objectives the result will be just that, awareness with little to no meaning or understanding.

These often fall victim to the shiny object syndrome. They’re important for a moment in time, but they fail to inspire meaningful connection and personal alignment.

Many companies lack the organization, discipline, and alignment of their mission statement and core values to cohesively implement and build a unified purpose.

When strategically leveraged as guiding principles and incorporated into core business operations, strategies, and leadership behaviors, companies cultivate a strong work culture driven by meaningful work, deep connection, and high engagement.

For the most part, companies do a relatively good job at providing the practical tools for leaders to highlight and showcase mission and purpose but often lack the guidance and expertise around how to build the framework to organize these into daily interactions, projects, and experiences.

Specific levers need to be pulled in a way that showcases the roadmap so that employees can see themselves driving and leading the way to their destination. This is a critical element of culture and core to retention, success, and engagement.

When employees feel like they belong and love their wok they perform at a higher level, are more engaged, and have a heightened sense of loyalty and commitment resulting in increased retention.

By incorporating your mission statement and values into the recurring process, you increase the speed of connection and purpose.

Exposing new employees during the recruiting process increases your ability to ensure cultural fit and increases retention.

When stories are shared that showcase how the company began, its unique history, and its leadership journey you provoke feelings that inspire value, pride, and connection.

As you communicate business goals, plan strategies for development and growth, and manage change, be intentional about incorporating how these are linked to your mission statement and values.

When these are strategically and intentionally aligned to essential business practices, you increase personal connection, foster a high trust culture, and create an environment that enables employees to see how their work adds value and meaning.

Mission-driven workers increase business productivity and revenue, engagement, and are critical to retention.
